Cat6 vs Fibre Optic: Which Cabling Does Your Property Need?
It comes down to three things: how far the data has to travel, how much bandwidth you need, and what the cable has to survive along the way. We install both every week — this is the same honest breakdown we give every client before we quote.
Cat6 / Cat6A Copper
The workhorse of offices, homes, and camera systems. Cat6 delivers 1 Gbps over a full 100-metre run and 10 Gbps up to 55 m — Cat6A carries 10 Gbps the entire 100 m. Its biggest advantage is Power over Ethernet: one cable delivers both data and power to cameras, Wi-Fi access points, door controllers, and VoIP phones, so there is no electrician needed at the device end.
Fibre Optic
Glass instead of copper — your data travels as light. That means 10, 40, even 100 Gbps over distances copper physically cannot reach: 300–550 m on multimode, 10 km and beyond on single-mode. Fibre is completely immune to electrical interference and storm-induced surges, which makes it the only right answer for links between buildings, across parking lots, or through electrically noisy industrial space.

Distance is the deciding factor
Copper Ethernet has a hard ceiling: 100 metres per run, patch cords included. Past that point the signal fails — no premium cable changes the physics. So when a camera at the far end of a warehouse, a gate at the edge of the lot, or a second building sits beyond 100 m, we either add a mid-span switch or run fibre. Between separate buildings, fibre solves a second problem too: copper links two electrical grounds and can carry damaging surges during storms — glass cannot conduct them.
Our recommendation for most GTA properties: Cat6 to every desk, camera, and access point; fibre for the backbone between floors, buildings, and server rooms. PoE convenience where you need it, future-proof bandwidth where it counts.

New Rack Builds
Every build starts on paper: switch and patch-panel layout, PoE power budget, UPS runtime, and airflow are planned before a single cable is pulled. Then we build it the way it should be built:
- Punch-down patch panels — never field-crimped plugs on solid-core cable
- Every cable machine-labelled at both ends and dressed with Velcro, not zip ties
- PoE switches sized with headroom for the cameras and access points you’ll add later
- UPS battery backup so cameras, phones, and door access survive power cuts
- Every port tested, certified, and documented before handover

Inherited a rat’s nest from a previous installer? We see them weekly — unlabelled cables, tangled patch leads, switches hanging by their cords.
